2004 Fulbright–Hays Week One
A NOTE FROM THE SEMINAR DIRECTOR
I had wanted to organize a trip to Russia for American social studies teachers for some time, but I knew it would be difficult for me to recruit enough teachers who could afford the $3,000 to $4,000 such a trip would cost. When I learned that the Russian, East European, and Eurasian Center at the University of Illinois also wanted to organize a trip—but was finding it difficult to make the detailed arrangements in Russia—I suggested that we join forces. I knew that the staff at the American Home in Vladimir, which I operate, was capable of putting together an appropriate program. The REEEC had the resources—and well earned reputation—to get a grant and recruit deserving teachers.
I will let the teachers comment on how they think the trip is going in the following pages. Join us for a pictoral tour as the teachers discover Russian history, culture, politics, and language.
